CITIES! BUSY
PLACES~FRIENDLY FACES
WEEK 9
Dear Imagine That! Parent:
As you know, for a few weeks several of our Cities! activities have included counting. The purpose of this is two-fold—to enjoy traditional songs such as Apples and Bananas that naturally lend themselves to talking about repetition and numbers and to introduce the children to the concept of one-to-one correspondence. Although many children can begin counting as young as two years of age, this counting is often done simply by rote rather than understanding the concept. One-to-one correspondence is the ability to understand that each number counted corresponds with an object. This is an important concept because it is the basis for understanding mathematics. The concept is explored in Family Activity #8, but we will continue to expand upon it in the coming weeks with new activities.
At home, consider making up your own one-to-one correspondence games using your City Faces Game Cards. You might help your child count the number of people’s faces on the cards or even the number of animals’ faces on the cards!
